i was a ranger/necro. The necro was very useless in my character. so i switched to ranger/ warrior and it is a little cooler. Problem is that im never using my sword though. So once again im thinking about changing it. Maybe to an elementalist

I like the Necro/Ranger combo for fun. I have my animal companion and raise armies of undead minions to fight at my side. If I get bored I can put my staff away and pull out my bow and use Ranger Bow skills or I could help out with healing by using Wells of Blood and Ranger Healing wells. Its a nice combo class that gives you flexibility if you are bored IMO.

First character was R/Mo. I enjoy it but only if I'm playing with others. Otherwise I find it to be somewhat uninspired.

Second character was an E/N. It wasn't too bad, but it's a weird combo to play and took some getting used to. I stopped leveling because it didn't seem like the combination for me.

Third character was a W/Mo. It's the most fun I've had playing the game. This combo can do things my ranger could never do at the levels he's at. The damage output appears to be considerably higher as well, and deep wound is godly. I wish rangers had some adrenaline skills now. It's a great balance of energy and adrenaline.

So far, my elemenalist mesmer has been the versatile character I've played and the most fun.

I started out has a fire elementalist like everyone else, then by the desert I switched completely to Earth, making myself a super tank with armor of earth while laying down devastating damage with earthquake->aftershock->crystal wave-> obsidian flame. By the shiverpeaks I switched out earthquake and aftershock for illusionary weaponry (the monsters had too high armor for non-armor piercing magic to do any damage) and went around meleeing, while armor of earth kept me alive XD. Finally when I got to Ring of Fire Islands, I ditched illusionary magic in favor of water magic, and I stockpiled myself with ward against harm, ward against elements, and ward against melee. This made sure my team could survive against the massive damage the monsters dish out here (especially fire) and allowed even henchmen like Orion to take a beating like w/mo =) Throw in maelstrom for those annoying casters and crystal wave as a finisher, my elementalist really is beast =P

Can you share what skills you are using? I made a monk/ranger too, and currently am I at Quarrel Falls, and I can't seem to find any use for any of the ranger skills =/

Actually, its not a very good combo PvE wise. In fact through most of the game I generally only use 1 mesmer skill while using 5-6 elementalist skills. The problem is most of the mesmer skills are geared towards pvp. However, there a some mesmer skills that combo nicely with elementalist skills. For example, echo and arcane echo is great if you combo it with high recharge skills to chain together nice combos.

Also, Illusionary weaponry is pretty fun and is actually quite a high damage dealer in parts of the game where monsteres have really high armor and most elementalist spells start doing really pitiful damage.

Domination line for backfire is really good against caster bosses, in fact, if you're using meteor shower, combining the two pretty much stops caster bosses dead. For those extra hard to kill monk bosses, throwing in an echo for 2 chained meteor showers is a nice bonus.

Mantra of recovery speeds of your recharge rate for your spells, so there's a lot of possibilities with that.

Just experiment a little, and I'm sure you can find a fun build to play as a e/me.

Currently I'm not actually using any mesmer skills, because I'm mostly focusing on complete defense by utilizing ward against harm, and the two godo earth wards to protect my team in the last 3 missions.

Default The best second class mesmer?

As a mes primary, which would be the all around useful secondary class? I'm not looking for "Best" nescessarily, just something that compliments him well.

As already mentioned, its subjective. Here's my own views though from my chars:

R/Me: my first. She's fun. She can trap, interrupt, shut down warrior, shut down caster, damage, whatever. Holds her own in most places.
Me/N: my current fave. I'm only lvl 7 but this rules. I have her as a fast cast/curse/domination char. Soul Barbs, Weaken Armour, Empathy, Conjure Phantasm in that order does some wonderful damage. And its so much fun to watch them hurt themselves. Also nothing better than dropping backfire on a monk and seeing them hurt themselves more than they got healed for
N/R: not done much yet, but planning a minion master/beast master. All out army going into war
Mo/E: Fun as it offers a new perspective if you take the heal or prot route. Shows a different way to finish missions and seems like a different game sometimes.

Of my four PvE characters, I'd put them in this order:

* Necro. The built-in energy replenishment via Reaping is both effective and addictive. All three other attributes are viable; Death lets you play with disease and corpses very effectively with or without minions, Curses can clear mobs very efficiently, and Blood is a useful support role that can also do damage. The attributes combine with each other or with many secondaries quite well. I've been N/R (using Serpent's Quickness and Healing Spring to bolster minion health), N/E (Water hexes with FoC builds) and N/Me (Arcane Echo) at different times.

* Ranger/Mesmer. An interrupt specialist that can also churn out damage. I find myself using the Mesmer skills less and less as I go on unless I'm anticipating a specific must-interrupt opponent, but the pure Ranger line is still a lot of fun to play.

* Ele/Necro. I've experimented with all four elements and incorporated Death in with them at times, but I've been spoiled by Soul Reaping and run out of energy too easily as an Ele.

* Monk/Necro. I had a nice build with Peace and Harmony, PaH got nerfed, and I subsequently tired of it. Offering of Blood is a nice Elite for my build, but I haven't had the energy to rework it as a Prot or Smiting Monk.

As previously stated - "best" is objective to the person playing but here are my two most favorite and why:

1st build ever was W/R then switched to W/E, didn't even make it to ascension.....just wasn't my thing.

Most favorite has to be my Necro - for looks and capabilities at high level. For the longest time I played em based on the Minions build and thoroughly enjoyed this play-style. Having my own lil henchie party made gaming near solo so much more fun than relying on all game-provided henchman. But then I learned from a guildie how shortsighted I was with other aspects of the Necro class - Curses can be a complete B***h to deal with....from the opposing sides point of view. It's extremely fun putting Shadow of Fear on Ranger mobs and totally limiting their ability to decimate our party with interupts, crippling/bleeding etc., then throwing Enfeebling Blood to furth weaken their attacks, Mark of Pain/Spiteful Spirit......man I love it!!! Then throw Blood is Power around to the caster in my group and get "I LOVE YOU, I LOVE BiP" compliments......great feeling.

2nd most favorite was an Air Ele/Dom Mes - Sure dishing out damage directly is awesome (I know, I had a mega-fire ele who spent endless nights lighting up FoW) but nothing truly beats shutting down another casters ability to do their job!! I only wish I could have a webcam in my opposing monks house to see their face when you hit em with Power Block and watch all their healing spells go bye bye for 15-18secs , or steal their precicous energy 1st then Power Block....mwahahahaaaa.

Just my 2cent (not fiddy, just 2cent)

I have a smiting monk build directed soley at taking down warriors. Now assuming you're looking for fun and not necessarily the praise and loving of your team, this build is very fun.

Balths Aura
signet of judgement
bane signet
symbol of wrath
holy strike
banish
healing breeze
res sig.

I just run it with an ivor's staff and it's fun. I usually start with a healing breeze cast so the warriors think I'm a healer and when they get close it's symbol of wrath+bane sig+sig of judge+holy strike+ balth's aura+banish .The 50+dmg/sec on the warrior is ridiculously fun when you take down 3 of them in random team arenas since they don't run out of the radius.

Word of caution though, I didn't put a huge amount of thought into this build as I use it merely for fun. Mesmers and interrupt rangers absolutely demolish this build. Best thing to do there is usually balth's aura the tank and try to spam breezes all around.

Anyways, that's not a great build, but it's sure fun.

Yes, all of them, with maybe the exception of Warrior (my own personal opinion). Each and every profession has its own very special skills, and the proper use of these skills will aid a team in its own very special way. And each profession is also special through its primary skill.

IMO, the best professions are Elementalist, Mesmer, Monk, Necromancer, Ranger and Warrior.

Actually, playing any of the other professions will teach you a lot about the game and after playing another class for a while, you'll come to appreciate your 1st character in another way.

I played all 6 classes through the game and my personal list is:
1. Me/E. I just love domination/casting. Besides: mesmers have style
2. R/Mo. Rangers have a great survivability. Combined with resurrection makes you a mission-saver.
3. W/R. Warriors are extremely tough, and you can easily farm with them. After ascention you can change secondary to /Mo to farm more effectively.
4. Mo/Me. Monking is fun and unique - totally different from any other class. But can be very stressful at times. Can be bad for the nerves.
5. E/Mo and N/Me. My first characters. I'm sure I'll play them differently now but I'm pretty attached to my first 4 chars ..
